Description

“Red Baron” is a highly modified P-51D Mustang which has a larger Rolls-Royce Griffin 57 engine and contra-rotating propellers installed in place of the stock Rolls-Royce Merlin. Prior to its modifications it was raced as “Miss R.J.” and “Roto-Finish Special,” winning Reno Gold in 1972. In 1974 it was sold to Ed Browning of Red Baron Flying Service who hired Lockheed Engineers Pete Law and Bruce Boland to make the modifications which transformed the “stock” P-51D into the RB-51 “Red Baron.”

"Red Baron" was the dominant player in the unlimited race field in the late 1970s, and at one point won four unlimited races in a row, a record which still stands. With Steve Hinton at the controls, Red Baron claimed the 3-kilometer piston-driven speed record of 499.018 mph in 1979 prior to its ultimate demise later in the 1979 Reno Unlimited race.

The artwork for this decal was originally issued with the exceptional 1:32 scale Fisher Models RB-51 kit. We rescaled the artwork and updated the printing to our latest Next Generation DIGITAL Silk standards including double-printing the white ink.
