The F6F-5 Hellcat was the first airplane flown by the Blue Angels in 1946, and Blue Angel 1 was flown by Lt. Commander Voris, the team leader.  This decal is printed on the ALPS printer using the metallic gold ink to simulate the gold leaf which was used on these Hellcats.  This set will letter two of the gorgeous Platz Hellcats.

The Blue Angels briefly flew two Vought F7U-1s beginning in March 1952, but the airplanes were grounded a few months later due to mechanical unreliability.  Aircraft number 7 was BuNo, 124426 and number 8 was BuNo. 124427.  They were delivered to the Blues without tail numbers, carrying the “Cutlass” script on both sides of each vertical fin. The tail numbers 7 and 8 were added to the outer side of each tail before they were flown in airshows.

For part of the 1953 show season, the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels operated a Curtiss R5C-1 (C-46) to support the squadron’s mission. The aircraft, a former USMC aircraft, had been based at NAS Corpus Christi, TX. This aircraft has the honor of being the first transport to wear Blue Angels markings while supporting the team.
